Nothing says comfort like a steaming bowl of soup on a cold winter day. Come to this class to learn all about classic soups – cream soups, stock-based, puréed and bisques. You can expect to cover the basic techniques used in making soup and practice making and garnishing several different types of soup. You will leave ready to make a wide range of delicious soups at home to keep your family warm this winter.

Maria Martinez: Native American Potter of San Ildefonso

Ancient pottery uncovered today often helps reveal stories of the past. In this film, noted American Indian pottery maker Maria Martinez demonstrates the traditional Indian ways in pottery making, beginning with the spreading of corn pollen, moving through the actual mixing of the clay and hand decorating, and finishing the art form with the building and use of the firing mound.

John Miller, archeology section head with the Arkansas State Highways & Transportation Department, will be on-hand to discuss the film as well as to share insights about his own experiments in reproducing prehistoric Native American pottery from 500-800 years ago.

At this concert Izzy takes us behind the scenes to discover the instruments, individuals and ideas that come together to create that unique symphony orchestra sound. Our popular "instrument petting zoo" lets children actually touch and play the instruments. It's a memorable occasion for the whole family.

Pasta, Pasta, Pasta and all its “Pastabilities”

Discover why Italians eat pasta 365 days a year and don’t get bored. Learn how to make and appreciate a wide variety of pastas as you explore basic pasta shapes and the history behind the various forms as well as some more modern variations. Experiment with different fillings. Compare sauces and sauce structure as you learn to pair the right pasta with the right sauce. Pasta really is filled with “pastabilities!”

The Cairo Story

From its inception on the drawing boards, through the construction process, to its restoration by the National Park Service, the Union iron-clad gunboat Cairo led a most unusual existence. After its sinking in the Yazoo River during the Civil War, the Cairo was thought to be lost. But by chance, the wartime gunboat was preserved by a shroud of silt-laden fresh water that left us with a priceless artifact.

Dr. Ann Early, Arkansas Archeological Survey state archeologist at Fayetteville, will shed additional light on riverine finds by discussing the recovery and conservation of the 900-year-old Peeler Bend dugout canoe from the Saline River near Benton, Arkansas.
